Upper caste attrocities

27 May
2006

The upper caste villagers of a place in Rajasthan threw stones at a wedding procession because it was of a lower caste community and the groom had dared to ride a horse. It seems the dalits are not allowed to ride horses.

This happened in the presence of the police as the relatives of the groom had informed the police in advance that he was going to ride a horse and hence some trouble was expected. This is the kind of protection we have for the so-called backward classes. In the times when we so vehemently protest against the government’s reservation policy, we should collectively act against such upper caste atrocities.

ok…help me out here…in the post about a. roy, you claim india to be pretty much a democracy…and america as country that is annhilating indigneous cultures, yet your concern and keen knowledge of lower castes indians in india does little to convince me of india as democratic or even progressive? whatever america maybe doing internationally, domestically it is over all a reliable and fucntioning democracy, i dont think there was any race or religious based genocide or atrocities in the past 20 years carried out by the government…although i can name a couple in india.

i do appreicate that you are also keen on recognizing that your fellow indians are so gung ho about shattering any criticism against india, but remain silent almost each time you have mentioned the darker side of your society.
