My Birthday

by amrit on 27th November 2004

It was my birthday on this 25th and it was perhaps the best birthday I have ever spent. For the first time I felt there are people who do things just because they like you, they love you, and there is no compulsion of relationship and there is no charade of friendship.

Instead of spending the evening at home or visiting some spine-chilling restaurant, Alka and I decided to go to Dilli Haat, later to be joined by her two teenage nephews. It was a great evening from all aspects: good food, good walk, lots of light moments, and some shopping. By the time we took a cab back home, it was 10:30 pm.

When we reached home Alka decided to light candles and earthen lamps. We couldn’t celebrate Diwali properly because there was some tension between my parents and us (Alka and I), so she had quietly decided that we’d burn candles on my birthday when there would be no one to bother us. Her nephews burst some crackers too, stirring up the neighbourhood in the process. We were completely exhausted when we went to bed at 5 in the morning.

Oh yes, I’ve got three excellent books as my birthday presents: two Ruskin Bonds and one Garcia (Living To Tell The Tale). I’ll read Garcia first and write about it. But I don’t know when. I’ve got work, that’s fine, but the major problem is with an older PHP/XML project that I’ve been unable to crack and I guess it is going to take up a major chunk of the next twenty odd days. Still, I plan to finish the book in the coming two weeks and write my thought on it after that. In the meantime I’ll keep posting small posts.
