Moderate Islam

Here’s an article that reveals the the moderate side of Islam and some of the quotations were really exceptional considering that they originated from the director of an Islamic union.

The author of the article linked above went all the way to Iraq to interview Ali Muhammad, Director of the Suleimaniya bureau of the Kurdistan Islamic Union. The Kurdish people are peaceful by nature and may be that’s why Saddam kept on dumping biological weapons upon them. They support America’s occupation of Iraq and of course they have valid reasons for this. They are more tolerant of the rest of the world that manifests in this statement:

“The West is a successful civilization,” he (Ali Muhammad) said. “But we think it is too materialistic and technological. If the Islamic East united with the civilized West, all of humanity would benefit.”

I perfectly agree with what he says later on:

In the Middle Ages, Christians were burning scientists. Then Muslims had a great civilization. The Christians were theocratic then. Muslims were not. We do not believe in a theocratic government that rules the people in the name of Allah. Power should come from the people. Christianity wasn’t weakened because it was separate from the state. Christianity was weakened when it supported oppressive states.

But, like in India, most of the Islamic world basks in the redundant, past glories that solves no purpose. It’s not about what people did, it’s about what people do, and what they will do, that really matters.

And here could be a good tip for Indian politicians and those stupid proponents of quota system:

“We have five members in our leadership committee who are women,??? Ali Muhammad said. “They were elected, and we do not use quotas. We also have a woman in our political bureau. Women and men work together. Below the leadership level, the numbers of men and women are the same.”
