Crass Regionalism of Raj Thackery

by Amrit on 5th February 2008

Whatever is happening in Mumbai is sad as well as shocking. If you can be attacked and bullied like this in your own country where are you safe then?  The recent violence against north Indians in Mumbai is nothing unique; it mostly happens against communities and now it is happening against people belonging to a different region. This whole mess was started by Bala Saheb Thakarey a few decades ago and this political minion called Raj Thackery is trying to re-ignite the old hatred against non-Maharashtrians. This happens when unjust, misguided political issues are not suppressed with brute legal force.

Many years ago immediately after the independence Sardar Vallabhai Patel consolidated various wayward states and helped build a unified India. Ever since then every Indian is free to go anywhere for the purpose of living and occupation and it is one of the fundamental rights given by our constitution. If a few Maharashtrians don’t like people from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh or for that matter Punjab coming to Mumbai and settling down there, well too bad; nothing can stop them as long as Mumbai doesn’t become a part of some other country.

I read on the Internet that the entire Mumbai film industry was wallowing in financial doldrums and it was only Amitabh Bachchan who gave hits after hits and secured the jobs of so many technicians and other workers belonging to Maharastra. What has Raj Thackeray done for Maharastra except for instigating people to commit violence and destruction? His political career in Shiv Sena took a nosedive when he allegedly got involved in a political murder. So what has he done for the betterment of Maharashtra in general and Mumbai in particular? Whatever Mumbai is today it owes everything to people from all the states.

Actually, migration happens everywhere. People move from city to city, state to state, and even country to country to seek better prospects. He says that the states from where the migrants are coming should develop enough so that the migration is reduced. Whereas it is true that Uttar Pradesh and Bihar must develop, migration to other cities and states is a natural phenomena. There are certain commercial activities that only happen in Mumbai. For instance, if a person wants to work in movies, he or she will have to go to Mumbai because the film industry is there. All major companies have set up their offices in Mumbai and when they hire people from other states those people have to come to Mumbai. So it has got nothing to do with just development; there are many other factors involved. It’s like, there are many Maharashtrians who go to the USA and other countries.

How should Raj Thackeray be treated, we were discussing this at home and Alka rightly said that he shouldn’t be arrested because then he will needlessly become a “martyr” and this will give him political advantage. Rather he should be allowed to become obscure. Violence, of course should be controlled but it should be tackled as a law and order problem and not a political problem. Calling it a political problem will needlessly make the issue important.

Personally I would suggest that the people being targeted should get together and put up a joint front. Running and cowering will get them nowhere and it will only embolden the goons. Instead they should fight back. This will not result in more violence; the threat of retaliation often maintains peace. Communities are only targeted when they seem vulnerable. You won’t find Raj Thackeray coming to Delhi or Lucknow and giving inflammatory speeches against north Indians because he knows that there people will beat the shit out of him.

Apparently the people in Uttar Pradesh are retaliating in a very novel way; they check all the trains coming from Maharastra and when they find Maharashtrian passengers in the trains they garland them, hug them and offer them sweets.

The present scene in Mumbai is primarily due to pressures of migration. As migration in natural, so is countereffect of migration. The problem is that with India’s diversity, if now we start having a problwm with migration within the coutry, then we are doomed as a union.

i agree with the comments made by raj thackery not fully ,but i codemn violence n poor people who were beaten i guess he shld have taken some legal route to solve the problem of local people.i would like to say for eg when ever we try to fill the bucket with water above its capacity the water will spill out naturally since it has some limited capacity .The problem here is mumbai has lots of slums n due which its lot difficult to develop the infrastucture n due to migration the pressure is increasing daily in order to accomodate the large migrants irrespective of their caste n religion . I do respect every citizen who is staying in mumbai what may be their religion from many years but now the situation is that mumbai is more of other people due to which locals r not getting their rights n jobs .. i would definatley like to ask people one question ” will they allow the people to stay in their house becoz since he is indian ” im saying this becoz this situation is going to be rise soon in coming years coz every city n place has limitations , the only soln to this is that states which r really underdeveloped shld be developed becoz in states like bihar n UP only population is increasing but there is no development uptill now y ?? why people from UP n Bihar dont ask their politicans the ? still dowry exits in these states y?? hai koi jawab ???kisi ke pass (the views which i have suggested is not to hurt the sentiments of people from UP or bihar nor im with raj thackery .. these r just my views )

Mr Tambe

I am sorry to say this but success depends on you… I have many Maharashtrian friends and all are unlike you…. Want to know why…. Because they worked hard to get where they are….. I feel you belong to the thought, that if you can’t come first, just throw/kill everyone who is above you….. For youe personal incapacity blame outsiders…….

Since you are aware to use internet, Just do a favor to yourself….. One that Mumbai doesn’t even belong to you, It belongs to koliwadas…… For that sake even we of Aryan race are not Indians then… The true Indian are tribals….. But i guess while North Indians were studying in classroom, getting knowledge you were busy accusing them of your failure. incompetence….

Secondly A north Indian is not holding you back from scoring well in exam…. He is not stopping you to appear in exams, unlike what some Maharashtrians did that to them…..

And open your eyes…. What Maharashtrian and Maharashtra you are talking about….. If you take out North Indians, Gujratis, Sindhis, (so called bifurcations), what will be left of Mumbai are only slums…. All development is done by them…… what is your contribution towards amchi mumbai…

Be the change to see the change…

So proudly calling Maharashtra your property, i really wonder what have you done for your Maharashtra… i doubt if you pay taxes, or you don’t litter/spit on street, or make noises, jump traffic signals, drive w/o helmet, or w/o personal interest helped a poor with food or something else…. I wonder if you started driving also before age of 18, and that too w/o licence.. and when get caught by traffic cop, you would have first offered him 50 rs…. what were you doing during terrorist attack, watching tv at home…. did you went out and offered any kind of help to injured, or were just criticizing like you have done in the blog….

Raising fingers at others is very easy, raising hands for work is indeed difficult, but that’s the difference between an animal and a human….

Even if Mumbai is left to you, what will you do….. Are you capable of running Ambani’s, Tata’s, Birla’s business…. Can you act like AB……. What management degree you hold…… Can you write like Gulzar, or think like APJ Abdul Kalam… Don’t tell me that since you were Maharashtrians, your teachers paid more attention to North Indians in your class because of regional biasing…..

Brother their is no shortcut to success/life…. Please do not get fooled by some politician with a failing career….. Learn to see beyond the clouds, or you will always be on ground….

I am sure you must be raged to read the content, but my sympathies are with you…. As if you will not change your mindset, life around you will never change….. You have to decide that whether you have to break the bus, or learn driving it……

My best wishes for your life and career……

Dear Prashant

You are right in quoting about Veer Marathas and political and social figures. People come to Maharashtra for various reasons. I am here because my Industry (TV n FILM) is based here. Lalu can be criticized for many things, but then he is the only one who brought Railways out of debt… And for that he has been invited Top Universities all over the world. Let’s not talk about Politicians, as we all know what they do and what they don’t…. In their salary they can’t afford to buy homes, still they have palatial bungalows and herd of foreign cars.

Raj is your hero, so was Bala sahab for many, 40 years back, when he did the same movement against South Indians. That was his stepping stone into politics, and now Raj is only trying to repeat the formula…

Indian is a nation…. The state division is mainly to delegate govt at different levels for better execution. Its not for division, which its now used for. Today Raj’s supporters will divide Maharashtra from rest of India. Tomorrow they will ask division on the basis of Andheri, Bandra, colaba etc…… That people from Mira road should not be allowed to work at Fort….. As they will always find issues to generate a support for them….

You raised question on what I have done for Mumbai. I am part of five NGO’s which help old age and orphans based at Mumbai…. 30% of my income goes to them…. I doubt if you think that’s doing something for Mumbai, but people are important to me than place…. Secondly I pay an income tax of 15 lakh per year, which I doubt will be higher than your Income (and that money goes to Maharashtra Govt)…. That speaks of My capability and no one is paying me because of being a North Indian/ Marathi or anyone else…. Anyone who is better than me at my job, will out place me some day, if I do not struggle to better myself continuously….

And please do a statistics, Marathi population is 35% of mumbai’s population… And only 5% are in upper strata of income…. Ever wondered why? I don’t know, but its not North Indians to be blamed…….

Why has Raj in his mission, targeted only Poor North Indians (non-sedentary worker class)….. Ask him if you ever get a chance of even coming close to him….. Ask him to throw out all the top businessmen and People who are financial backbone of Mumbai…….

We speak in the language we know…. And at my home we all speak in english, as I am brought up at Delhi….

Language is way of communication, don’t make that an issue…. Tomorrow Another Raj will boycott people who eat pizza/ Manchurian…

I am not anti-Maharashtrian as you have quoted, I am anti anyone who spreads bias, and separate people on basis of birth (place, caste, national)…. As its something no one has control over…… So if you also believe in the same; you should never object; if at an interview, in your place an unsuitable candidate is hired at your place, why, just because by Birth he happens to be son of some big shot called Raj…… I will ask you then how do you feel…..

Mumbai is financial capital of India, as Delhi is a political capital. Primary reason for Mumbai being that, is its Port, and was a major business center even at the time of Britishers.

And people have been and will always migrate to a place where job avenues are better… Compete, prove you are better and get that Job… A jobless North Indian will not live in Mumbai, as its highly costly, he will himself go back…

If you feel still what Raj is doing is right… Then these Marathi people all over the world should also be thrown out….. (none of them are successful because they are Marathi, but that they were sincere and hardworking)

If you have to make a present politician your hero, than you should make Madhavrao Godbole your hero – Union Home Secretary who resigned during Babri demolition citing incompetence of Government. His integrity and intellectual honesty is legendary

Shivaji Maharaj always quoted veer Maratha, as Indian was not an united nation, it was rajwadas… You named a few gret people born in Maharashtra…… Ambedkar Sahab, Veer Savarkar, Vitthal Kamat, Lokmanya Tilak, Vikram Pandit …. And you said I might not be aware of them…… Dear we were never taught to live with prejudice….. I am well aware of them and many more, that you might not have even heard of…. Try becoming like them than someone else, depending on your field of work………

The list that i have made for you, of People born in Maharashtra and have left their name on Hallmark – (And I hope some day I see your name in this list for doing right….. These were/are great human being and success stories, free from any biasing… not because they were Maharashtrians/ Non North Indians….. But they knew their job and did it the way no one could)

only 5% marathis are in upper strata of society?,
who told you this?,
then from where these names of successful Maharashtrians came from if marathis are not competent enough
no wonder you are one more biased outsider,

you doubt others ability to earn more than you,
defiantly you are more self centered & arrogant.

you give 30% of your income to ngo’s so kind of you but its very easy to post claims on forums as no one is going to ask you any proof,…….

mamata has already raised questions of lalus economic policies & accounts of railways, no wonder she is planning to issue white-paper on current economic status of indian railways……….

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/probe-rlys-bloated-profits-under-lalu-ni/470165/

Mumbai as a financial capital??? it is a imaginary term having no legal or constitutional basis,
or if any city progressed it becomes a financial capital, ready to be exploited by others????????????

why maharashtrians opposing u.p. bihari migration???????
read these news………

http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/politics/north-indians-should-get-35-seats-in-mumbai-thane-region_100247856.html

you will understand why…………
we dont want that our next generations live in state ruled by u.p. biharis, wandering here & there even for basic education, food, employment, security like u.p. biharis are doing today………..

ANSHUMAN 22nd September 2009 at 9:18 am

Hi Amar

The article you mentioned about Mamta Bannerji and Nitish Kumar raising allegation on Lalu was dated 3 june….. today is 23 sept, i wonder what happenend to the probe…..

If you missed my write- up, its for reminding you that i said lets not talk about Politicians…. The blame game is what they do…. present ruling party will raise allegations to previous, and so on and so forth…..

The second article you mentioned was again political…. a statement and demand by Sanjay Nirupam…… A one time Shiv sena party flag bearer, who has now turned around… if you can make a guess, its nothing but just to gain political mileage of Non Maharashtrian vote bank…..

I am against reservation, be it for any region…. Save the reservations for people who need it, financially weaker section, who can’t afford things….. And if Sanjay Nirupam says that their is so much population of Non Maharastrians, and if they are deserving to become minister, they should fight independent, who is stopping them…..

You mentioned about my arrogance, and that I think others are incompetent…. well dear, Neither i am Bill Gates nor Mahatma gandhi….. But i am sure I am working hard to attain my goals, by hard work and not favoritism…. And that was a personal comment in reply to the persona i was Interacting to (as the message was directed to him)…. And you just made it personal, wow… I wonder what were you thinking while reading my post/ or my english is bad to give you wrong perception…. thats for you to guess…..

the 5% statistic is from the socio-economic survey that is done by Maharashtra Govt Agencies, every 5 years…. when you trust above politicans and their word, i think you will believe these statistics…..

If You know someone in IT Dept, then use your contact, and find out my profit-loss balance sheet…. To know what I do with my hard earned money…..

Financial capital is obviously a slang term coined…. and if you want to go into that, then please do show me line of cancer, or tropic crossing over the earth when you find it……. or a pole at North and South pole….

And in your last sentence you said you do not want to be ruled in a state controlled by UP/BIHARIS…. Wow for that…. you live in a nation dear which is (was) popular for its secularity…. a nation which at times have elected a Sikh/Muslim as a president/prime minister….

Mr Amar I personally feel sorry for you, as missed seeing what i was saying….. stop dividing people on name of birth; as its the only thing one has no control over, apart from death….. And if you are still keen on this division by birth, i Pray that your next Birth should happen in Taliban destructed Afghanistan; and if i may get a chance, i will ask then, that why the world should help you…..

prashant 24th September 2009 at 12:53 am

thanks amar

Agreed. There needs to be further planning with regard to infrastructure of three major metro cities of India including, Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkotta. But, telling people to get out in this way or beat them up just because they do not know a language or do not belong to a state is not as per the constitutional guidelines.

The constitution of India gives the right to all its citizens to stay anywhere in the country. Raj Thakrey like any other politician is least worried about Maharashtians. He just wants to gain political millage from all this. As rightly pointed out, Sardar Patel did a lot to unite this country. Now these people are dividing it again.

And, the person who will gain most out of this entire controversy is Sharad Pawar. The whole episode will not only destroy the image of Raj Thakry but also Bal Thakrey. This is a totally wrong move that will fire back.

pradip 18th February 2008 at 3:06 am

you don’t understand raj to out of state people. Raj is hero for every Maharastrian.

natasha 2nd April 2010 at 10:38 am

raj may be a hero for every maharastrian but if he continues to behave and beat up people like this the i believe the day is not far when he will be beaten up to his last breath. He is not a powerful man to make all this happen the people working for him are big fools who are following his lines to do this. What has he done for maharastra n what does he wants to prove……beat up your own country people.

Anonymous 18th February 2008 at 7:00 am

If Maharastrians have sunk so low that Raj is their hero then its understandable. They are suffering from acute inferiority complex. Soon mentally bankrupt Raj will say that Maratha Regiment in Army will defend only Maharashtrian border and these extremely “innocent: MARATHIS will say our hero Raj is right. Are we living in global era or want to go back to Peshawa Raj of middle age ?

prashant 2nd April 2008 at 7:43 am

raj is doing this for maharashtrians. it is not mean only marathi people their are lots of gujrati, marwadi and other community.why he is against only northindians. how much load mumbai can take. and he is not against every northindians their are lots of people in mns who r northindians.why u r not asking comment on matter of aasam why amar singh not giving comment on aasam.why abu aazami not taking rally against aasami.u must give me the answer. raj is only telling that when u have a vacancy in goverment u give 1st prefreance to bhumiputra he can be marathi, gujrati or any cast or rigion.if u r telling that raj is dividing india then why the states are divide onbasis of cast like gujrat of gujrati, bhaiya of up bhihar.

natasha 2nd April 2010 at 10:41 am

such incompetent …….n so much of insecurities….grt i think north indians are doing a good job……whole maharastra is so very worried….

Bazigaar 21st October 2008 at 7:12 am

Wat the hell r we discussing guys…
lets get back to our wotk .. or do something if you can…rather than just discussing…all this shit…

Niether Raj nor any other politician will ever change and none of them is doing anything for ppl…

sandeep tambe 19th January 2009 at 12:04 pm
