America sets global greenhouse gases emission goals for 2008

31 May
2007

Nobody believes George Bush when he urges the various nations to set goals to tap the greenhouse gasses emission by 2008 but I think it is a good development. At least he is acknowledging that there is a problem with the globe and the temperatures are rising. Whether you like it or not, he heads one of the strongest nations of the world and again, whether you like it or not, his opinions do matter.

The USA still refuses to sign the Kyoto Protocol though, and this issue raises legitimate doubts amidst those who are really concerned about global warming and are not satisfied by political rhetoric. Understandably, people are skeptical:

National Environmental Trust president Philip Clapp said, “This is a transparent effort to divert attention from the president’s refusal to accept any emissions reductions proposals at next week’s G-8 summit. After sitting out talks on global warming for years, the Bush administration doesn’t have very much credibility with other governments on the issue.”

Bush said:

“The United States takes this issue seriously,” Bush said in a speech on his agenda for the summit. “My proposal is this: By the end of next year, America and other nations will set a long-term global goal for reducing greenhouse gases.”

“To help develop this goal, the United States will convene a series of meetings of nations that produce most greenhouse gas emissions, including nations with rapidly growing economies like India and China,” he added.

Well, everybody knows how seriously the United States takes global warming. They are more concerned with their GDP and how many cokes and pizzas they can consume and how many gas-guzzling automobiles they can drive. Global warming? Duh!

The Public Prosecutor of the BMW Case dropped

31 May
2007

The law has become a mockery in our county and the recent NDTV expose of the prosecutor-defense nexus in the BMW hit and run case re-iterates the stagnation. Consequently the public prosecutor, IU Khan, has been dropped. Recently I was reading in the newspaper how, despite the judge having reservations, the public prosecutor had summoned a witness about whom it was sure that he would turn hostile; and he did. He refused that the person he saw getting out of the driving seat after the accident was present in the court.

You may receive less spam now

31 May
2007

With the arrest of one of the top 10 spammers in the world a decrease in spam is expected all over the world.

Soloway (the spammer) pleaded not guilty Wednesday afternoon to all charges after a judge determined that — even with four bank accounts seized by the government — he was sufficiently well off to pay for his own lawyer.

He has been living in a ritzy apartment and drives an expensive Mercedes convertible, said prosecutor Kathryn Warma. Prosecutors are seeking to have him forfeit $773,000 they say he made from his business, Newport Internet Marketing Corp.

$773,000 is not much money. I think he must have made much, much more with spamming. Here’s another interesting profile of a big Russian spammer I read a few months ago.

The quota violence spreads to other cities

31 May
2007

Gujjar protests are spreading to other cities now. I saw in TV the crowds of Gujjars burning the effigies of Vasundhara Raje Scindia in Delhi, Haryana, Meerut, and of course Rajasthan. It seems every party wants it share of the quota slime. The BJP government had promised the Gujjar community before the elections that their community will be accorded an SC/ST status if the BJP came to power. The promise was conveniently forgotten and hence the ongoing violence that has so far claimed 13 lives. Many policemen have been maimed. When will the proponents of the quota system learn (or accept) that they are creating chaos in the country by pitching communities against each other.

After the initial “royal” dilly-dallying the Raje government has invited the Gujjar community for talks. Vasundhara Raje, being a haughty royal (she’s I guess a queen or something of a princely state called Gwalior) must be wondering how dare these mere mortals protest so vehemently against her.

Frankly, the Gujjar community no way qualifies an SC/ST tag. It is not an oppressed community and in fact people fear them and generally avoid confronting them. Most of the dacoits originate from the Gujjar community (this may give an impression that they are oppressed and hence often have to take to arms to seek justice and revenge). The Delhi Police Force is full of Gujjars. They are a very aggressive people. Have a look at the protesting crowds in your TV and you’ll know what I’m trying to say. When you see them protesting on TV, you’ll notice they have this strange fetish of lighting fires and stomping upon them or hitting the burning things with sticks and slippers. This was evident in 100% footages. I don’t like to say that, but they all look so abominable.

Instead fighting for the quota pie the Gujjar community should focus on education and reforms. They should give up lurking in the semi-outlaws realms and start living like normal, law-abiding citizens.

About not replying to comments

31 May
2007

If some of you feel I should reply to your comments but I don’t you can blame it on this video. There has been a deluge of comments for this post and often the right sidebar brims with comments about this post. Let the dust settle down and I’ll start replying to your comments with greater regularity. Or, what the heck, today (since I’m not feeling well) I’ll go through the older posts and see if some comments require me to reply, and then I’ll reply.

Ebay Acquires StumbleUpon

31 May
2007

Ebay has acquired StumbleUpon for $75 million and I wonder what Ebay is going to do with StumbleUpon. StumbleUpon is a link sharing website and its home page says:

StumbleUpon is a brilliant downloadable toolbar that beds into your browser and gives you the chance to surf through thousands of excellent pages that have been stumbled upon by other web-users.

I too have installed the toolbar and through it I’ve discovered many great websites, especially literary and web development websites. StumbleUpon is a great way of getting traffic to your website, just like Digg and other social bookmarking websites.

The Woes of the Rising Rupee

31 May
2007

Well, ask me! Since most of my earnings come from abroad, the rising rupee value means less money for me. But instead ruing the fact I’m trying to earn more. In the macro-economics terms the rising rupee may render the RBI poorer. The link says:

A strong rupee, which adversely impacts exporters’ earnings, could also leave the Reserve Bank of India poorer. Any appreciation in the rupee results in an erosion in the value of RBI’s foreign exchange reserves in its balance sheet.

This is paradoxical. Doesn’t a rising rupee mean a healthier Indian economy? And this puzzles me:

“The only way out for the central bank could be to resume its intervention in the forex market, by mopping up dollars to prevent the rupee from rising further,??? said Mr Barua. The Kotak Mahindra Bank report foresees that the central bank would resume its intervention in the foreign exchange market, prior to June 30, probably also to shore up its CGRA before its year closes.

Can someone throw some light on this in the comments section?

High Magnitude Earth Quakes Expected

31 May
2007

In the Jammu and Kashmir region. The Himalayan region is quite a shaky place because of the seismic imbalances constantly caused by the continental shift. They are formed due to continental collision between the Indo-Australian plate and the Eurasian plate (source: Wikipedia). The Himalayas rise 5 mm per year and that’s why the region is so unstable.
