The most viewed channel on YouTube

31 Aug
2006

According to this Business Week blog, an allegedly 16-year-old girl named Bree’s YouTube channel, lonelygirl15, is the most watched channel. This topic is being discussed at length at various places, and many talk about it as an effective viral marketing tool. But my interest in this story has got nothing to do with marketing or promotion; otherwise this post would’ve appeared on my content writing blog. I’m more interested in this text from the Business Week blog:

Pluto is no longer a planet

24 Aug

Here’s why.

Pump, bomb and mom

24 Aug
2006

According to this report a guy didn’t want to reveal to his mom that he was carrying a component of a penis pump so when the authorities at the O’Hare Airport asked him what the object was, he told them it was a grenade. His mother was standing behind him.

Now the poor guy can get 3 years on charges of felony. He got the worst of both the worlds. He might go to jail, and if he escapes that, his mom knows he uses a penis pump. Makes you wonder where greater peril lies.

Yahoo! includes Flickr photos in search results

24 Aug
2006

According to this TechCrunch post the Flickr images are appearing in Yahoo! search results. This is another reason one should think twice before using Flickr as your online photo repository; it’s no longer private. Well, it never was, but at least it wasn’t appearing in search results. Hopefully there is an option at Flickr that lets you decide whether you want your images to show up in search results or not. I stopped using Flickr on a regular basis when it was taken over by Yahoo!.

Get your name is FireFox 2.0

24 Aug
2006

If you recommend even one person to download and install FireFox 2.0 before September 15, 2006 your name will be put in the FireFox 2.0 code. So go to this FireFox link and email a friend or a relate urging him or her to download and install FireFox. If not even for name, you’ll be doing a favor to the person by discouraging him/her from using the Internet Explorer and switching over to this excellent browser.

Islam is history, says Taslima Nasreen

23 Aug
2006

And some people would say, “Oh, she has lost her head!” That would be in the physical sense ;-). The author of the much controversial book Lajja said in a recent press conference:

The Islam religion and their scriptures are out of place and out of time. It still follows the 7th century laws and is hopeless. The need of the hour is not reformation but revolution.

She also revealed that the noted poetess Kamla Das — now called Kamla Surayya — regretted converting to Islam. The poetess confessed to Taslima that there is no equality for women in Islam and it is one of the most oppressive religions of the world.

BJP, VHP and RSS guys are going to love this and may even declare her Bharat Mata (Taslima maiya ki jai ho!). If she really loves her life she should head for the west as a priority matter because by providing adequate security to the author, the Indian government wouldn’t risk offending the sentiments of the Muslim community.

No big deal about Vande Mataram

22 Aug
2006

The BJP once again has fallen into its self-generated stupidity binge (as usual) by attacking Muslims for refusing to sing Vande Mataram. Whatever reason the Muslims may have for not singing the song, my problem is more about the personal freedom. I shouldn’t be labeled as a traitor for refusing to sing a patriotic song. Hundreds and thousands of corrupt and vile individuals all over the world sing their national songs despite continuously bleeding their countries. How does it matter?

I find the song beautiful, especially the version sung by Lata Mangeshkar in the movie Anand Muth (adapted from the novel by the same name written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee). It’s one of my favorite patriotic songs. According to Wikipedia that song was written in a highly Sanskritized form of the Bengali language. I have been wanting to learn it by heart and then sing it in one go for a long time. But no matter how awesome the song is, if some people from a certain community don’t want to sing it, they shouldn’t be forced into doing so. Typical of the BJP.

My suggestion to anti-quota protestors

22 Aug
2006

I don’t think the anti-quote protests are going to yield any tangible results. This government doesn’t understand the language of democracy. I would suggest the protestors to do the following, from whatever fields they come:

  • Anti-quota doctors should stop treating ministers supporting and propagating the quota system — let they be treated by doctors from reserved categories.
  • All security personnel having reservations against reservations should stop protecting such politicians.
  • Engineers who find reservations unacceptable should stop maintaining infrastructure and machinery.
  • Teachers and professors who think reservations are detrimental to the growth of the country should stop taking classes.
  • Journalists against quota system should stop covering events involving ministers in favor of reservations.
  • Municipality workers should stop supplying water and electricity to such ministers.

And we can keep adding to the list. I think this is how Gandhiji protested against the British — it was called the non-cooperation movement. We need another non-cooperation movement in the country, and this time it’ll have to be carried out without a Gandhi.

Ramadoss gives clean chit to cola companies

22 Aug
2006

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare today gave a clean chit to cola companies. Well, what do you expect from our ministers, and particularly from the likes of Anubumani Ramadoss, Union minister of heath and family welfare. According to the link mentioned above, he said in the parliament:

The conclusion of the expert committee is that the report of the CSE does not provide conclusive evidence for presence of different pesticides in the concentration reported.

So does it mean cold drinks will again be available in the parliament where they were banned the moment Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) declared they had found abundant traces of pesticides in Coca Cola and Pepsi? I would like to suggest the citizens of the country to let the politicians regularly partake of at least two bottles of the colas for at least three months and then venture into drinking them. Let Ramadoss come on TV and guzzle down a few bottles just to assure us.

Why would gods drink milk with spoon?

21 Aug
2006

As devotees throng to feed gods milk with spoons it makes me wonder, why would the almighty gods, those gods who control the universe, who can fill the cosmos with milk, drink milk with tiny spoons? I’m a believer, I mean, I’m not a believer in the religious sense, but I believe things easily, and hence, if someone comes running to me and tells me that there is a miracle happening out some place, I’m prone to believing it without much ado. This world is full of miracles. Life itself is a miracle.
